Curling Ice Technician

The term “Competition Ice” is used to describe curling ice installed in an arena (a non-dedicated curling facility, such as a hockey rink) over an existing ice surface for a short-duration competitive event.

Program Delivered by:Curling Canada

Prerequisites required to apply:

Space may be limited;
*selection based on experience may be required.

One of the following two options:

  1. “Certified” Curling Ice Technician Program OR;
  2. “Certified” Level 2 (previous levels system) with Safe Sport Education Module 

AND

  • 3+ years experience working as a Certified Curling Ice Technician
  • Resume
  • Letter of Interest outlining career aspirations
  • Endorsement letter from Curling Canada Member Association
Program Length:Five-day in-person training. Training will take place during an installation in an arena.

Who should attend:Certified Curling Ice Technicians who wish to gain more knowledge for their personal professional development. Certified Curling Ice Technicians who want to get involved in competitive events being held in their province/territory.
Learning outcomes:

Participants of the Competition Ice Technician workshop can expect to learn about:

  • Leveling ice and flooding
  • Paint/Logo/Line Installation
  • Pebbling/Scraping
  • Scheduling – equipment delivery, TV Camera installation, volunteers
  • Techniques to vary ice conditions to provide optimal speed and curl for the environmental conditions, age/stage/ability/discipline of competitors
  • Monitoring and Managing environments with influence from spectators, TV lights and crew, weather, less control over environments
  • Rock Maintenance
  • Troubleshooting
  • Takedown

Curling Ice Technician Evaluation

When the Ice Technician is ready to have their skills evaluated for certification, they will need to follow their Member Association’s process for evaluation. Please refer to the Curling Ice Technician Evaluation form for the evidence that is required to be observed by the evaluator.

The evaluation may be done in-person with an evaluator present, or via video. The Ice Technician candidate will be contacted to determine the best way for the evaluation to be conducted.

Video Protocol:

  • The video may be submitted in segments capturing each evidence in the Curling Ice Technician Evaluation form.
  • Ensure the camera is stable and steady.
  • Try to ensure there is adequate lighting.
  • In addition to videoing each evidence, video scraping up and back 1 sheet of ice and pebbling one way.
