The match-ups are in place for the semifinals of the 2015 Everest Canadian Senior Men’s & Women’s Curling Championships at the Thistle CC in Edmonton.
While seven of the eight teams were known prior to tonight’s action, their opponents were a mystery until the last stone was delivered Friday night. The only game of do-or-die consequence was fought on Sheet 6 with Sandra Jenkins of British Columbia stealing three points in the third to coast home 9-3 against Peggy Taylor of Northern Ontario. Not only did Jenkins advance to the playoffs, she vaulted to the No. 2 seed when both Alberta’s Terri Loblaw and Nova Scotia’s Colleen Jones lost their games. That result left the three teams tied for second place at 4-3. Since their win/loss record was 1-1 in games among them, the draw shot distance totals for the championship pool ranked BC as No. 2, NS as No. 3 and Alberta as No. 4.
Jones’ Halifax-based team gave up two points in the eighth to lose 5-4 to Manitoba’s Kim Link. Meanwhile, Loblaw thought she had stolen the win from Saskatchewan’s Cathy Inglis when the Yorkton skip’s last stone draw rubbed a guard. But the delivered stone re-directed on to a Saskatchewan stone pushing it to shot stone and the 6-5 win
In Saturday’s semifinals, Cathy Inglis (SK) will once again meet up with Terri Loblaw (AB) while Sandra Jenkins (BC) will play Colleen Jones (NS). The winners will play Saturday afternoon for the gold medals and the right to represent Canada at the 2016 World Seniors at a site yet to be announced.
Alberta’s Glen Hansen from the Hinton CC, finished first overall at 6-1 with a 6-2 win over Randy Neufeld of Manitoba. Hansen stole a single in the sixth end then two more in the seventh end, forcing the handshakes. The loss by Neufeld pushed New Brunswick’s Wayne Tallon into second place, both with 5-2 records but Tallon had defeated MB in the round robin.
In Saturday’s men’s semifinals, Glen Hansen (AB) will play Ted Butler (QC) and Wayne Tallon (NB) will meet Randy Neufeld (MB). The winners will play Saturday afternoon for the gold medals and the right to represent Canada at the 2016 World Seniors at a site yet to be announced.
In other championship pool games tonight, Newfoundland & Labrador’s Laura Phillips scored two in the eighth end then stole the extra end for a 6-5 win over Québec’s Élaine Roy. Jeff McCrady’s Ontario team coasted to an 8-2 win over Nova Scotia’s Wayne Sangster.
