South Korea, Switzerland keep slates clean at BKT Tires & OK Tire World Women’s Championship

Team South Korea and two-time defending champions Team Switzerland are tied for the lead at the 2022 BKT Tires & OK Tire World Women’s Curling Championship, presented by Nature’s Bounty, in Prince George, B.C.

The South Koreans, skipped by EunJung Kim, fought off skip Stefania Constantini’s Team Italy 7-4 Tuesday in the evening draw at the CN Centre.

The win moved Team South Korea into a first-place tie with idle Team Switzerland, skipped by Silvana Tirinzoni, at the top of the standings, both with 6-0 records, in the 13-team round-robin competition. The Swiss had the night off.

The two teams remain ahead of skip Anna Hasselborg’s Team Sweden who improved her record to 6-1 after an 8-4 win over fading Team Japan’s skip Ikue Kitazawa, who fell to 4-3. It was the third straight loss for the Japanese.

It’s bumper-to-bumper traffic in the standings after the Swedes, with Team Canada, Team Denmark, and Team United States all following with 4-2 records.

The Canadians, skipped by Kerri Einarson, moved into prime position Tuesday afternoon after defeating Team Japan 10-4.

In the only other game played on the evening shift Tuesday, Team Norway’s Marianne Roervik, with Kristin Skaslien throwing final stones, defeated winless Team Turkey, skipped by Dilsat Yildiz, 10-5. The Norwegians improved to 3-4 while the Turks remained winless at 0-6 in their world women’s curling debut.

Team Germany’s Daniela Jentsch was granted a forfeited win over Team Scotland in the other regularly scheduled game. The Scots had to drop out of the competition over COVID-19 concerns. The Germans, at 3-4, remain in the hunt for a playoff spot.

Team Canada plays Team Sweden in the morning draw Wednesday at 9 a.m. (all times PT).

The top six teams qualify for the playoff round with the top two receiving a bye while the remaining four play in the first round. The gold-medal game will be played Sunday.

The 2022 BKT Tires & OK Tire World Women’s Curling Championship continues Wednesday with draws at 9 a.m., 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.
