About the High-Performance Consultant Program

In an effort to ensure that Canadian High-Performance (HP) teams are able to access all avenues of support, Curling Canada will henceforth acknowledge High-Performance (HP) Consultants as full members of the support team for adults (aged 20 and over, excluding varsity) curling teams competing at the National and International level. “Approved” High-Performance Consultants shall be provided access to ice at national championships in the same capacity as certified coaches.

The High-Performance Consultant program will be administered by Curling Canada’s Sport Safety and Education Officer under the direction of the Director of High Performance.

Candidates must meet the following eligibility requirements to be considered for the program:

  • Past-Performance Eligibility: Winners of a Scotties, Brier, Canada Cup, Olympic Trials OR Three Grand Slam Championships (does not include alternate players) AND;
    • Scotties, Brier, Canada Cup, Olympic Trials, OR three Slam Championships (does not include alternate players);
  • Has a demonstrated interest in supporting Canadian high-performance teams, AND;
  • Has not been sanctioned (provisional or active) by any sport organization in the last 12 months and not is subject to any active sport integrity investigations.

Candidates who meet the General Past-Performance Eligibility may proceed with the application process.

  1. Candidates are invited to contact the program administrator; Sport Safety and Education Officer, Jennifer Ferris ([email protected]) to express an interest in becoming an HP Consultant and provide information confirming that they meet the General Eligibility.
  2. Once eligibility has been confirmed candidates will be required to complete the HP Consultant Application by virtue of activities which are added to the individual’s Sideline Learning (or similar platform) account.

Candidates must:

  • Provide their National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) Coaching Number,
  • Provide the date they completed the NCCP Make Ethical Decisions Online Evaluation.
  • Provide the date they completed the Coaching Association of Canada’s Safe Sport Module (or other designated educational program).  Completion date MUST be within the last 12 months.
  • Attest to reviewing Concussion Education Material.
  • Agree to adhering to Curling Canada’s Safe Sport Policies – inclusive of Code of Conduct and Universal Code of Conduct to Prevent and Address Maltreatment in Sport.
  • Submit a current (within 12 months) criminal record check, and attest to any changes of their criminal record status.
  • Complete Competition Manipulation Training and agree to adhere to Curling Canada’s Competition Manipulation Policy.
  • Agree to annual training requirements to maintain HP Consultant designation.

Once all requirements are met the candidate will be informed regarding the outcome of their application.

  1. HP Consultants will be required to renew their designation annually by completing any requisite training/acknowledgements as determined by Curling Canada.
  2. Only HP Consultants with a renewed designation will be permitted to coach at Curling Canada adult national championships.

NOTE:

  • Curling Canada may revoke the HP Consultant Designation for any violation of its Code of Conduct or Safe Sport Policies.
  • Curling Canada can also revoke the HP Consultant Designation as a recognized designation for ice access at its adult national championships with six months notice to current designation holders.

Frequently Asked Questions

It is intended to do both…enable people currently working with teams to continue and build up a list of HP Consultants who would be available to support Adult High- Performance Teams.

HP Consultants wishing to utilize their HP Consultant designation will be required to participate in Curling Canada’s HP Consultant Annual renewal program.  Only “Renewed” HP Consultants will be permitted to use the HP Consultant designation at National Championships.

HP Consultants may work with any adult team (20 years of age and older, excluding Varsity). Curling Canada has decided that NCCP coaches are best suited to work with athletes in the developmental stages.

The HP Consultant Program recognizes prior learning achieved through a competitive resume as a player vs. the traditional NCCP coach training. Curling Canada is looking for players with significant competitive experience who are well equipped to be a critical HP Resource to an aspiring team. 

The HP Consultant will be expected to participate in annual Sport Safety training as would any other coach.

This designation will be recognized at all adult competitions operated by Curling Canada. For the purposes of international competition, the potential role of the High- Performance Consultant will be based on a performance resource needs assessment which will be undertaken in consultation with the team.

Some NCCP Training (ex. Ethics, Safe Sport, Safety in Sport) will be required for all coaches and HP Consultants.

HP Consultants will be encouraged to seek formal coaching certification but will not be required to do so. The Panel will be seeking opportunities to provide online training that will enhance the Consultant abilities and knowledge base.

No. There is no contractual agreement between HP Consultants and Curling Canada. Compensation would be negotiated between the team and consultant as required.
